One Savior: Why Paul Recenters Everything on Christ

Col 2:8-10 

“Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elements of the world, rather than Christ. 
For the entire fullness of God’s nature dwells bodily in Christ, 
and you have been filled by him, who is the head over every ruler and authority.” 

Col 1:19-20 

“For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 
and through him to reconcile everything to himself, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross”. 

Thoughts

The people at Colossae were being pulled in a dozen directions at once—legalism, mystical experiences, angelworship, harsh selfdenial, and early forms of teaching that denied Jesus’ real humanity. All of it sounded reasonable, even spiritual. But Paul knew that anything that shifts the spotlight away from Christ—even by a few degrees—eventually leads believers off course.

So he writes to recenter everything.

He reminds them that Jesus didn’t just appear human—He was human, truly and physically. Paul nails this down when he says, “In Him dwells all the fullness of deity” (Col. 2:9).Col 1:19 declares that all God’s fullness dwells in Christ; Col. 2:9 declares that this fullness dwells in Him bodily, directly refuting the early ideas and grounding salvation in the real, incarnate, crucified, risen Christ. And in 1:21–22, he makes it unmistakable: we were reconciled to God through Christ’s physical death. No illusion. No symbolism. No spiritual metaphor. A real Savior in real flesh offering real redemption.

Paul also confronts the other distractions—asceticism, angel worship, rulekeeping—because each one whispered the same lie: “Christ is good, but not enough.”

Paul’s answer is simple and blazing:

Christ is supreme. Christ is sufficient. Christ is all you need.

When I first started playing disc golf, I carried only four discs. Then I added more. And more. I wanted a disc for every possible shot—hyzer, anhyzer, forehand, touch, power, you name it. Each disc had a purpose.

But imagine having one disc so wellcrafted and so wellknown to you that you could shape every shot with it. One disc for every line, every angle, every distance. If you knew that disc deeply, it would be the only one you’d ever need.

That’s Paul’s point.

The Colossians were being told they needed a whole spiritual “bag” of extras—rules, rituals, visions, intermediaries. Paul says no.

Once you truly know Christ, you don’t need spiritual addons. He is enough for every shot, every season, every struggle.

The more acquainted you become with Him, the more you realize: Christ is not one option among many—He is the One who makes all the others unnecessary.

Holy Father, thank You for sending Your Son to do for us what we could not do for ourselves. May we realize more fully what we have when we have Christ in us, because He is our hope and glory. Forgive us when we fail you and continue to work in us so that we may live in such a way that it pleases You.
