The One Above Every Generation

Colossians 2:6
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,
Thoughts
Every sport has its legends—players who define their generation. In football, people point to Tom Brady. In basketball, names like Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson rise to the top. In disc golf, some look to Ken Climo for his unmatched major titles, while others highlight Paul McBeth for his generation‑shaping dominance. And now a new generation—players like Gannon Buhr—push to define the next chapter.
Each era has its standouts because the game changes, the competition shifts, and the landscape evolves. But Paul reminds us in Colossians 2:6 that there is one who stands above every generation, every field, every name: “Christ Jesus the Lord.”
The word Lord—kurios in Greek—means supreme in authority. Paul isn’t just giving Jesus a title; he’s declaring His identity. Jesus is God. And throughout the Gospels, Jesus confirms this:
-
Using God’s personal name (John 8:58)
-
Claiming divine authority (Matt. 28:19; John 5:27)
-
Receiving worship (Matt. 14:33; John 20:28)
-
Forgiving sin (Mark 2:5–12)
-
Claiming eternal existence (1 John 1:1–3; Rev. 1:11–18)
In disc golf, when a respected champion speaks—whether it’s Climo on form or McBeth on mindset—you listen. Their words carry weight because of who they are and what they’ve accomplished.
So how much more should we listen to the One who holds all authority in heaven and on earth?
In the late ’70s, an ad slogan said, “When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen.” Paul presses a deeper question:
When Jesus speaks… do you listen?
When Jesus ascended, He sent the Holy Spirit, who now speaks through the Word of God. The issue isn’t whether God is speaking—the issue is whether we’ve slowed down long enough to hear Him.
Have you heard Him lately?
Reflection #1
Where am I giving more weight to human voices than to the voice of Christ?
Reflection #2
What intentional step can I take this week to listen more closely to the Spirit through Scripture?
Meditate on these as we throw to the glory of God.
Prayer
Thank you, Holy Father, for not leaving us comfortless but providing the Holy Spirit to guide us and teach us. Create within us a desire to be in Your word regularly so we can hear You when You speak.
In Your name, we pray,
Amen
